7 Hidden Costs Quietly Eating Your Shop’s Profit (and How to Cut Them)

You work hard, sales look good, but at the end of the month there’s very little left. Sound familiar? The problem is often not your sales. It’s small costs you don’t notice. Here are 7 of them.

1. Unsold Stock

Money sitting on your shelf earns nothing. Slow-moving items also get old, damaged, or out of fashion.
Fix: Every month, check what hasn’t sold in 60 days. Put it in a combo offer or sell at a small discount. Order less next time.

2. Wastage and Damage

Spoiled goods, broken items, and wrong orders add up quietly.
Fix: Write down every loss for one month. You’ll be surprised by the total. Then fix the top cause first.

3. Discounts You Give Too Easily

A “₹20 off, just for you” to every customer can cut your profit by half on small-margin items.
Fix: Decide your discount rules in advance. Give discounts for bigger purchases or festive offers, not on request.

4. Electricity and Rent Waste

Lights, fans, fridges, and AC running when not needed are a daily leak.
Fix: Switch off what isn’t in use. Check if your space is bigger than you really need.

5. Payment and Transaction Charges

Card machine fees, delivery app commissions, and bank charges take a cut of every sale.
Fix: Encourage UPI payments, which are usually cheaper. For delivery apps, set slightly higher prices there or promote direct orders on WhatsApp.

6. Your Own Unpaid Time

If you spend 3 hours daily on tasks someone else could do cheaper, that’s a cost too.
Fix: List your daily tasks. Hand over simple ones like cleaning or packing, and use your time for selling and customers.

7. Losing Customers After the First Sale

Getting a new customer costs far more than keeping an old one. If people buy once and never return, you’re paying again and again to find new buyers.
Fix: Save customers’ numbers (with permission) and send a WhatsApp message on festivals or new arrivals. A simple “thank you” goes a long way.

Start Small

Don’t try fixing everything at once. This week, pick just one cost from this list and fix it. Even saving ₹100 a day is ₹3,000 more profit every month.

Which of these is costing you the most? Tell us in the comments.
